The Right Way to Apply Liquid Lipstick
Follow these guidelines, and it really will last all day.
By Shannon Farrell
Whether you consider yourself a lipstick, lip gloss, or lip stain kind of woman, you’ve probably heard of liquid lipstick. This particular formulation offers intense, long-lasting color with a matte (non-shiny) finish.
That being said, despite its major staying power, liquid lipstick can be tricky to work with. In fact, you may have even had a bad experience with one yourself. (Uneven color and flaky lips? Not so attractive.) But that doesn’t mean you should give up. With the right application tips, you can wear a fun, bold color and not have to worry about touching up your look during the day.
“A liquid lipstick is much more densely pigmented, thicker, harder to spread, and stains quickly,” says makeup artist Victoria Duke. “With lined and hydrated lips, they’ll last and last.” Here’s how to apply liquid lipstick the right way:
First, Fight Flakes with a Sugar Scrub
To maximize hydration, lips need to first be exfoliated to provide proper penetration. “Blend sugar and an emollient oil, like coconut oil or olive oil, and rub the mix over your lips,” says Duke. Lightly massage the mixture in circles with your finger for 30 seconds, and then remove with a towelette.
Next, Prep Your Lips with Pencil
“Use a lip pencil to line and fill in the lips,” says Duke. This will prevent the product from settling into the lines. When choosing a lip pencil, opt for a close color match or one slightly lighter than your shade of liquid lipstick, which won’t show through the product.
Follow With a Magic Wand
The doe-foot wand that comes with liquid lipstick offers seamless application—so you can apply it like you would a gloss (an easy way to do this is starting at the middle of your lip and spreading the color outwards on both sides). If you want a sharp outline around the lips, dab a lip brush on the wand and follow the natural movement of your lips to create a more defined line.
The Bottom Line On How To Wear Liquid Lipstick
By prepping your lips before you apply product, you’ll be setting yourself up for a look that lasts all day.
